2021-06-17 Planting Yes, we this was a 'replanting' of the soybeans in T3 plots, all reps. Soybeans were planted in the T3 plots on May 22, 2021. Seed corn maggot was eating the soybean seed so we had a poor stand of beans. On first observation and a few quick stand counts we have 20-50K seeds per acre. At a minimum we need 50K seeds per acre to expect any chance of a respectable yield for the T3 plots. We had many things go wrong in the T3 plots: soybeans were planted after a rye cover crop into dry soil, soybeans were in the ground when we had 4 nights of cold temperatures, and we have not received much rain this year. However, the biggest concern is the seed corn maggot. It seems we have had a perfect storm for the T3 soybeans. 1. We have evidence of seed corn maggot feeding on the soybean seeds and stems which has been backed up by our seed dealer. Our seed dealer has other customers that had problems this spring with seed corn maggot feeding on soybeans. In all cases with the seed corn maggot feeding on the soybeans has been following a rye cover crop (which is what we have in the T3 plots). Brook, Leon, and I looked at the soybeans in the T3 plots and I asked Mike Staton to join me. Mike is the MSU Extension Soybean Educator, Mike is responsible for the Michigan Soybean On-Farm Research. Mike was at KBS today completing data collection with some of the trails that he is working with Brook on. I asked Mike to look at the T3 plots and Mike agrees that we have evidence of seed corn maggot feeding. Gary our crop scout will not have time to look the plots until Friday. Basically, we have three options: 1. 1. We can keep the plots as is. We do have a treatment effect from the rye cover crop. 2. 2. We can replant the field. Start all over by spraying the current stand of soybeans and replanting the soybeans. 3. We can inter-seed more soybeans in between the existing rows of soybeans. Brook, Mike Staton, and I all agree that a farmer would inter-seed more soybeans within the existing soybean rows.

Seed Treatment: Iowa State University HPS5500 was treated with Concep III (seed safener), Apron (systemic fungicide) and Maxim (systemic insecticide). No seed tag or label was available with the seed lot that was sent from Iowa State. Fertilizer rate controller on the planter was not working correctly so we decided to apply the N before planting with the N side-dress applicator toolbar. Expected rainfall tomorrow (May 18th) so with the calendar date in mid May we decide it was more important to plant the corn on May 17th before the rain event and apply the fertilizer at a later date. Avipel Seed Treatment was applied in the seed hoppers at a rate of 1 tablespoon for 25 lbs of seed. We used 3 bags of seed ~ 168 lbs of seeds so we used ~ tablespoons of Avipel. Aveipel Seed Treatment is applied to the seed to discourage sandhill-cranes, turkeys, and other birds from eating the corn seeds before the seed germinate and as small seedlings.

2023-05-15 Planting Planted corn in the LTER MCSE T1 plots, pleases see notes below as not all the reps were planted on the same day. The corn in the REX plots were planted on Monday May 15, 2023. The REX plots were so much different compared to the rest of the T1 plot area that we decided to plant the REX plots first and plant the rest of the T1 plot area later. Because of soil conditions we needed to set-up the planter differently. The T1 REX plots were more like the T2 (no-till plots). Order of planting for the REX plots: T1R4, T1R1, T1R2, and T1R3. Planted the main plot area (outside the REX plots): Tuesday May 16, 2023 planted reps 5, 1, 3, and 2, except the last three passes (18 rows (45 ft)) on the east side of T1R2. Because of hydraulic problems on the tractor we did not finish planting all the reps on Tuesday May 16, 2023. Wednesday May 17, 2023 with the tractor hydraulic repaired we finished planted the last two reps of the T1 plots, planted reps 4 and 6, and the last three passes (18 rows (45 ft)) on the east side of T1R2. To compensate half of the head's width (approx. 3.75') was harvested on either side of the original pass.
