Planting oats is not a normal part of the biodiversity protocol however, because of wet weather after the 2003 harvest c. rye was not planted so it was decided that oats would be the best option to replace the c. rye cover crop treatment.

We replanted the clover because the clover that we frost seeded on March 16, 2005 did not grow much over the spring and summer. If we want to have a clover crop to plow under next spring I decided that replanting was necessary. The plots that red clover were planted in were treatment 3, plots 111, 203, 306, 403, treatment 6, plots 107, 207, 317, 406, and treatment 17, plots 116, 211, 302, 417. We did not have a count of the number of seed that each pound of the rye contained, therefore we can not say how many seeds were planted per acre. 2010-04-22 Planting Planted Canola in GLBRC Main Site Treatment G2 all replications (reps R3, R2, R1, R4, and R5). Canola was seeded using the JD750 no-till drill pulled by the JD6420 tractor. A total of 22.85 pounds was used in the 1.75 acres planted giving a seeding rate of 13.1 pounds per acre. Calibration of the JD750 drill at rates below this becomes problematic due to the lack of fine adjustment at the bottom end of the calibration mechanism. The 13.1 pounds/A corresponds to setting #3 on the seeding mechamism, seeds were planted approximately at 1/2”, depth rate #1 on the drill. Canola was replanted becuase fall-seeded winter canola was not observed to be emerging uniformly and stand was very sparse. Weather conditions were 57F, sunny.

We did not have a count of the number of seed that each pound of the rye contained, therefore we can not say how many seeds were planted per acre. However, the 121 lbs/A (since 56 lbs seed/A = 1 bushel) works out to 2.2 bu/A.

2010-10-07 Planting Planted Canola in the GLBRC Main Site treatment G4, all replications (reps 5, 4, 3, 2 & 1). Planted with the JD6420 tractor and the JD750 10' no-till drill. Seeding rate was 8.23 #/A (14# in 1.7A total planted) and was planted at a depth of 3/8” (setting #2 on the drill). All plots seeded in 9 passes of the drill giving 90' width of planted area; planting started in the southwest corner of each plot. The variety of seed used was Wichita (Michigan Certified Seed) obtained from Dr. R. Freed in 2010.

2011-05-04 Planting Planted Canola in the GLBRC Main Site treatment G4, all replications (reps 3, 5, 4, 2 & 1). Planted with the JD7420a tractor and the JD750 10' no-till drill. Actual seeding rate was 9.9 lbs/A (18.8 lbs in 1.8A total planted) and was planted at a depth of 1/2”-3/4”. Settings on the drill were #2 on the seeding rate and #2 on the depth. All plots seeded in 9 passes of the drill giving 90' width of planted area; planting started in the southwest corner of each plot. The variety of seed used was DeKalb Genuity Roundup Ready Canola DKL72-55. This variety is listed at 80,070 seeds/lbs which indicates we seeded at 792,693 plants per acre.

2011-08-25 Planting Planted oats into the GLBRC Main Site Treatment G4, canola stubble. Oats, varitey ForagePlus, ”Lot 2-FP-0-FP1TS0, FP2TS0;0D8” was seeded at 90 lbs/A using a John Deere 750 no-till drill at 7.5 inches between row pulled by the John Deere 7420a tractor. The full width of the plots was seeded, extending into the alleys on all four sides of the plot. The canola stubble was left following swathing and harvesting of the canola on 8/4 and 8/12 respectively, and was about 8-12” high.

2011-11-03 Planting Planted Winter Canola in the GLBRC Main Site treatment G3, all replications (reps 5, 4, 3, 2 & 1). Planted with the JD7420a tractor and the JD750 10' no-till drill. Actual seeding rate was calculated at 14 lbs/A (28 lbs in approximately 2A total planted) and was planted at a depth of 1/4”-1/2”. Soil temperature at time of planting was 46 degrees F. Settings on the drill were #3 on the seeding rate and #2 on the depth. Planting was conducted at 3.6-3.8 mph (speed B4 at1500 RPM). All plots seeded in 10 passes of the drill giving full plot width of plot area (91 feet), extending out into the alleyways; planting started in the southwest corner of each plot except for G3R1 when planting started in the northwest corner. The variety of seed used was DeKalb Genuity Roundup Ready Winter Canola DKW46-15 (Lot Number: 752WCT7YY). This variety is listed at 133,000 seeds/lbs and 85% germination which indicates we seeded at 1,582,700 plants per acre.

Rye was planted with 10' JD 750 no-till drill pulled by JD 7420b tractor at a speed of 3.5 - 4.0 mph and a planting depth of 1/2 inch. Planting population is 1-1/2 to 2 Bu/A. Planter was not calibrated therefore we are not sure of exact population. Fall rye is a product of Canada from CISCO Seeds out of Indianapolis IN. USA. There is no variety listed but stated that it has 99.41% pure seed, .59% inert matter and 88% germination rate. Order that plots were planted in are as follows. (G2R5, G3R5, G3R3, G2R3, G3R2, G2R2, G3R4, G2R4, G3R1, G2R1)

Seed was obtained from the CISCO companies, Indianapolis, IN, Lot # WGB11432, by why of Battle Creek Farm Bureau, Climax location. Stated germination rate was 88%. Planting depth was 1 inch deep and drill population setting was #26. Planted with the JD7420a tractor and JD750 10ft no-till drill. We did not have a count of the number of seed that each pound of the rye contained, therefore we can not say how many seeds were planted per acre. However, the 105 lbs/A (since 56 lbs seed/A = 1 bushel) works out to 1.875 bu/A. We put 4 bags of seed in the drill (4*56=224 lbs). We removed 45 lbs of seed from the drill after planting. The drill meter indicated that we planted 1.7A. (224-45=179 lbs) (179/1.7=105 lbs/A). Drill setting: 26.

2013-08-16 Planting No-till seeded red clover at 10.5 lbs/A in the LTER Main Site T3 plots all replications (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6). Due to heavy weed pressure in the spring T3 plots had to be sprayed which also killed most of the red clover. Clover was replanted after wheat was harvested and the plots were sprayed with a pre-plant burn down to control the post harvest weed flush. Clover planted 1/4 inch into the ground.
