2016-10-10 Harvest Harvested Corn Stover in the GLBRC, treatments: G2 and G3, all replications. Harvested - Eastern 75 feet (30 rows) of each plot, except for G2R1 and G3R1 the western 75 feet (30 rows) were harvested. The remaining 15' (6 rows) area unharvested is the stover non-removal microplot, located on the western 15' of each plot, except for G2R1 and G3R1 where it is located on the eastern 15' of the plot. Stover weights were determined by placing the round bales of stover on a Rice Lake Rough Deck Floor Scale System (model # 67704)(5,000 lbs capacity) with a RWL 390 DC Indicator. Floor scale was placed on the back of the Dodge truck (with flat bed) (MSU #1653). Truck was driven to each plot and bales were placed on the scales with the JD 7420b tractor with front loader and bale spears. Bales were weighed and removed from the plots on October 11, 2016. Weight of each round bale was recorded. Grab samples from each rep was placed in paper bags weighed for wet weight and placed in plant dryer and reweighed to determine percent moisture for each replication. Six rows on each side of each plot were harvested with the Kincaid plot combine and was not included in the total plot weight. Moisture and test weights were determined using a portable Dicky-john GAC500 XT grain analysis moisture tester. Corn harvested was ? corn hybrid. Estimated harvest time was from 1:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. (this estimate is just harvest time it does not include equipment set up and equipment clean up time). Harvested corn in the bait crop around the GLBRC site: 12 rows of corn harvested on the south and east sides of the bait crop area. The 12 rows were the 30' most northern area and the 30' most western area of the bait crop area. The northern side we harvested the 30' most southern part of the north bait crop area. No rep 6 area was planted to corn this year.

2017-10-18 Harvest Harvested corn in the LTER Main Site Treatments T1, T2, T3, and T4 corn plots, all replications. Dates plots were harvested: October 18, 2017: T1R1, T1R2, T1R3, T1R4, T2R1, T2R2, T2R3, T2R3, T3R1, T3R2, T3R3, and T3R4. October 19, 2017: T1T5 T1R6, T2R5 T2R6, T3R5, T3R6, T4R1, T4R2, T4R3, T4R4, T4R5, and T4R6. Before harvest we removed 'harvested' a 15' headland pass on all north and south end of each plot. The grain harvested from the 'headland pass' was not recorded as weight of grain removed from each plot. The reason for the 15' headland pass on both end of each plot was so that we would have room to turn the combine around in the alleyway. We record a weight from all the east and west sides of all the plots however all the plot weights were joined and one weight was recorded from each plot. 2016 was the first year that the harvest plot weight was from the entire plot area not just the weight from the east side of each plot. 2017 was the second year (first year for corn) that the weight from each plot was from the entire plot area not just the weight from the east side of each plot. Total number of corn rows were determined prior to harvesting the corn to determine the width of the area harvested. At planting time in spring of 2017 we made 19 passes with a 15' JD 1730 corn planter (30 inch rows). 19 * 6 rows/pass = 114 rows. Corn was harvested with a John Deere 9410 combine. Plot weight was determined by unloading corn from the combine in to a Brent Weigh Wagon, by Unverferth Co., equipped with three load (weigh) cells. The three load cells are located on the axle and tow tongue (hitch) of the wagon. Moisture and test weights were determined using a portable Dicky-john GAC500 XT grain analysis moisture tester. Corn variety harvested was (Dekalb DKC52-84 RIB) corn hybrid in T1, T2, and T3 plots. Corn variety harvested was ? in T4 plots. 2017-11-10 Harvest Harvested soybeans in the GLBRC G3, all reps (1, 2, 3, 5, and 4) on November 10, 2017 (yes, November 10th we had so much rain in October we could not harvest them before November). Entire plot weight was determined by unloading soybeans from the combine to a Brent Weigh Wagon, by Unverferth Co. Number of soybean rows harvested from each plot were counted and recorded to determine total area harvested. Each plot had 51 rows of soybeans harvested as the main plot harvest data. Eleven rows on each side (micro-plot area) of each plot were harvested with the Kincaid plot combine and was not included in the total plot weight. Moisture and test weights were determined using a portable Dicky-john GAC500 XT grain analysis moisture tester. Soybeans harvested in G3 were (Pioneer P22T69R). Estimated harvest time was from 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. (this estimate is just harvest time it does not include equipment set up and equipment clean up time). Harvested soybeans in the bait crop around the GLBRC site, 'rep 6' plots (2 west plots), and north half of the ('old' Productivity study area). Amount of soybeans harvested in the bait crop area: The two 'rep 6' plots were 1040 lbs at 16.1% moisture and 55.0 lbs/bu (test weight). Amount of soybeans harvested in the bait crop area: The soybean bait crop around the GLBRC main plots, which consisted of one strip on beans (south strip) on the north side of the field and two strips on the east and south strips (both east and south strips of beans in the two outer strips i.e. of the three bait strips on the east side we had soybeans in the west and east strips of the three strips of beans. On the south side of the three bait strips we had soybeans in the north and south strips of beans). Also we had beans in the north half of the 'old' Productivity study area. Total amount harvested in the five strips of beans and 'old' productivity study was 8140 lbs at 16.1 % moisture and 52.9 lbs/bu (test weight). Estimated harvest time to harvest the bait crop was from 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. (this estimate is just harvest time it does not include equipment set up and equipment clean up time).

2017-12-18 Harvest Hauled 96 (out of 105 bales) prairie bales out of L1 to Prairie View Dairy Farm (the dairy farm south of Lux Arbor on Parker Rd.) Four loads (24 bales per load) totaling 80,200 lbs net weight (40.1 tons). A Prairie View Farm Staff member unloaded our trailer at their farm using on JD pay-loader.

2017-12-21 Harvest Hauled 180 (out of 255 bales) switchgrass bales out of M3 to Prairie View Dairy Farm (the dairy farm south of Lux Arbor on Parker Rd.) Todd hauled three loads of (36 bales per load) totaling 88,580 lbs net weight (44.29 tons). Joe hauled three loads of (24 bales per load) totaling 58,520 lbs net weight (29.26 tons). 71 bales were hauled to the KBS Dairy for use at the KBS Dairy and will sell a few bales to local farmers. Four bales were hauled to the KBS GLBRC compost pile because the bales were half bales or loose bales totaling 1500 lbs net weight (0.75 tons). A Prairie View Farm Staff member unloaded our trailers at their farm using on JD pay-loader.

2018-10-09 Harvest Harvested soybeans on the LTER Main Site between October 9, and October 10, 2018, treatments T1, T2, and T3; all replications. Please notes below for specific dates for individual harvest dates for each specific plot. Number of soybean rows harvested from each plot were counted and recorded to determine total area harvested. Plot weight was determined by unloading soybeans from the combine to a Brent Weigh Wagon, by Unverferth Co. At harvest each plot was harvested as one plot area (was not harvested with the west side and the east side). Before harvesting the plot area we harvested a 15' 'headland pass' on the north and south end of each plot. The 'headland pass' area was not included in the harvested data area. The west side of each plot contained a headland pass across the entire width of the plot on the north and south end of each plot and ~ 107-110 rows of soybeans for T1-T3 and 54 rows for T4 located on the west side of each plot. The created headland was one pass across both north and south headland with the JD 9410 combine with a grain head (15 feet wide). The reason that we need to create an artificial headland was because we needed more room to turn the combine around. Grain yield and moisture from treatments 1-4 across all six replications were recorded. The micro plot area measures 50 ft (15 meters) from the north edge of the plots towards to south and 133.3 ft (40 meters) from the west edge of the plots towards the east. The micro plot area in treatments 1 and 2 that did not receive any weed control was mowed down before harvest. Harvest dates for specific plots: October 9, 2018: T1R1, T1R2, T1R3, T1R4; T2R1, T2R2, T2R3, T2R4, T2R5, and T2R6; T3R1, T3R2, T3R3, T3R4. The 6 rows (15 ft) in the west micro-plots of each rep were not mowed. Equipment Used: JD 7420a tractor and Loftness 15 ft Draper Windrower Shredder. Howard Straub III (from the KBS Dairy Center) baled the corn stover on November 19, 2020. Equipment Used: JD 6175M tractor and NH 450 Cropcutter round baler. Equipment Used: JD 7420b tractor (with loader) was used to move/load bales. Equipment Used: Dodge truck and gooseneck trailer was used to move bales. Bales were taken to KBS Dairy Center to be used for bedding for the cows.

2021-10-19 Harvest Harvested soybeans on the LTER Main Site on October 19, 2021, treatment T3, all replications. Because T3 plots were 'replanted or inter-seeded' in June because of a poor stand due to seed corn maggot eating the soybeans. We did not count number of rows harvested for the width of harvested area. In 2021 in T3 plots we measured the area (in ft) away from the plot corner post to determine the area harvested. Seed corn maggot was eating the soybean seed so we had a poor stand of beans. We inter-seed more soybeans in between the existing rows of soybeans. So counting rows was impractical because of the number of rows planted was hard to see because of the inter-seeded rows from the second planting date. Plot weight was determined by unloading soybeans from the combine to a Brent Weigh Wagon, by Unverferth Co. At harvest each plot was harvested as one plot area (plots were NOT harvested with the west side and the east side). Before harvesting the plot area we harvested a 20' 'headland pass' on the north and south end of each plot. The 'headland pass' area was NOT included in the harvested data area. Equipment Used: Dodge truck and gooseneck trailer were used to move and weigh bales. Portable scale was put on the rear of gooseneck and bales were place on scale to obtain weight. Bales were taken to KBS Dairy Center to be used for bedding for the cows.

The 6 rows (15 ft) in the west micro-plots of each rep were not mowed. Equipment Used: JD 7420a tractor and Loftness 15 ft Draper Windrower Shredder. Joe Simmons bailed corn stover with Krone 1270 square baler. Equipment Used: JD 7520 tractor with Krone 1270 square baler. Equipment Used: JD 5410 tractor (with loader) was used to move/load bales. Equipment Used: Dodge truck and gooseneck trailer were used to move and weigh bales. Portable scale was put on the rear of gooseneck and bales were place on scale to obtain weight. Bales were taken to KBS Dairy Center to be used for bedding for the cows.

2023-11-09 Harvest Harvested corn in T1, T2, and T3 plots. T1: harvest notes: All reps of T1 plots were harvested on November 9, 2023. T2: harvest notes: T2R1, T2R2, T2R3, and T2R6 were harvested on November 7, 2023. T2R4 and T2R5 were harvested on November 8, 2023. T3: harvest notes: T3R1 was harvested on November 9, 2023. All other T3 plots, T3R2, T3R3, T3R4, T3R5, and T3R6 were harvested on November 10, 2023. Harvested with the JD S660 combine with a 6 row corn head. Plots were unloaded into the weigh wagon to determine plot weight for each plot.

2023-11-16 Harvest Jarrod Rhoades mowed corn stover in G1 main plots: Reps 1, 2, 3, 4, & 5. Corn stover was mowed into windrows so that they could be bailed. 2023-12-15 Harvest Mowed and baled switchgrass at Marshall Farm (field M3). Removed bales from field on December 16, 2023.

2024-04-10 Harvest Mowed (harvested) switchgrass in T6, reps: 6, 5, 4 and 3. Micro-plots in the Northwest corner of each rep were already harvested in fall of 2023. Equipment used: JD 4995 Discbine. These four reps were harvested and bailed same day. T6 plots were not harvest in fall of 2023 due to prolonged wet weather. Locations where the bales dropped from the baler were marked with JD GPS on the LTER Gator. T6R1 and T6R2 were harvested on 4/15/24, due to weather.
