2011-03-14 Planting Frost seeded medium red clover (variety not stated) at 12 lbs/A (13.5 kg/ha) into winter wheat in the Biodiversity Study treatments B3, B6, and B17, all replications. Clover seed was from DKB Farms & Services LLC, Columbiaville MI 48421 Lot S 80 100023 DKBCLO8: OCIA Certified Organic Clover Lot# B1E1-2J3J4A-BJ5O108 (Member ID 11449). B3 plots: 111, 203, 306, 403; B6 plots: 107, 207, 317, 406; B17 plots: 116, 211, 302, 417. Clover was seeded with John Deere 5425 tractor traveling at 5.0 mph, gear C1 at 1350 rpm’s, and Gandy Air Seeder (15 ft boom length). Gandy motor setting was 0.9 and gates on the Gandy were all the way open. Boom height was about 24 inches from the ground. Temperature was 24°F, wind was from south-east at 3 mph.

2009-11-14 Planting Planted LTER main site treatment T4 replications 1, 2, 4, and 5 with Pioneer 25R47 Soft Red Winter Wheat, untreated seed. Planted with JD 5425 tractor and JD 450 conventional drill. Depth was set to approximately 1/2” to 3/4”. Seeding rate was calculated as 181 lbs/A compared to the calibration which was estimated at 178 lbs/A. Each pound of seed contained 11,000 seeds, therefore 178 lbs/A x 11,000 seeds/lbs = 1,958,000 seeds/A.

2010-11-03 Planting Planted grass in LTER main site alleyways. Alleyways which were seeded were on the north end of replicate 5, south of all plots along B Avenue, and area immediately to west of Cellulosic Ethanol Study. Seeded areas were seeded with the Brillion SS12 seeder in 2-3 complete passes over all areas. Soil had been previously worked up with chisle plow, subsoiler, disc harrow, and soil finisher, however, in the ensuing 3-4 weeks we had received a couple of rains so the soil was somewhat packed down. It was determined that 2-3 passes of the Brillion's packers loosened the soil sufficient to allow the seed to obtain good contact with the soil and for a significant amount of seed to be buried. 825 pounds of seed were used to cover an area of approximately 3.3 acres. This worked out to be approximately 250 lbs/A. An additional 50 pounds approximately was hand seeded at intersections with other drives and at the start and end of the alleys that were seeded. The mixture of seed used was Kalamazoo Wear Green Mix from Kalamazoo Landscape Supply. Kalamazoo Wear Green Mix was composed of 33.25% 2nd Millennium Tall Fescue, 33.22% Lexington Tall Fescue, 33.16% of Kalahari Tall Fescue, and 0.33% inert matter; the seed mix had a stated germination rate of 85%. Weather conditions at time of planting were cold and mostly cloudy (39 degrees F).

2010-06-25 Fertilizer Application Fertilized LTER Main Site Interaction Plots (field B3) with ammonium nitrate at 130 lbs N/A. Dry ammonium nitrate (34% N) was applied in two passes using a Gandy with a 15' boom. The 130 lbs N/A was equivalent to 382.4 lbs/A of total ammonium nitrate. Care was taken to not fertilize inside the lysimeter area.

2010-10-13 Planting Planted winter wheat in the LTER Main Site Biodiversity Study. Wheat was a soft red winter wheat, Pioneer 25R47, treated seed. The following treatments were planted: B3 (111, 203, 306, 403), B6 (107, 207, 317, 406), B9 (119, 205, 314, 409), B17 (116, 211, 302, 417) and B20 (120, 215, 318, 420). Seed was planted with the JD450 conventional drill at a depth of 1/2” to 3/4”. Seeding rate was 1,690,000 seeds per acre (setting #36 on the drill). All plots were planted in three passes, one on either side and then a last pass down the middle.

2010-05-26 Mowing Mowed the LTER Main Site Treatment T5 Poplar plots, all replications (reps 4, 3, 2, 1, 5, and 6). Mowed between the poplar rows with the John Deere 5425 tractor and a 6' John Deere 618 rotary mower (brush hog) to 4-6” height

2011-11-07 Planting Seeded Soft Red Winter Wheat into Biodiversity treatments B8 (118, 214, 310, and 408), B5 (114, 217, 312, 405), B11 (110, 216, 309, 411), B14 (115, 204, 304, and 414), B17 (116, 211, 302, 417), and B20 (120, 215, 318, 420). 1.9A total seeded with 310 lbs of seed (163 lbs/A, 182 kg/Ha). Variety planted was Pioneer 25R47 (treated seed) which had 12,000 seeds/lb so this worked out to a seeding rate of 1,960,000 seeds/A. Our goal was 2,000,000 seeds/A. Seeded with the JD5425 tractor and the JD450 conventional drill.

2012-03-05 Planting Frost seeded clover into 2012 Biodiversity wheat plots with cover crop. Organic medium red clover seed was frost seeded into Biodiversity treatments B5 (114, 217, 312, 405), B8 (118, 214, 310, 408), and B17 (116, 211, 302, 417), all of which had winter wheat planted in November 2011. Clover was seeded at 12 lbs/A in two passes of a Gandy air seeder with a 15' boom length. Weather conditions at time of seeding: Sunny, wind 0-3 mph from NW, 1/2” light fluffy snow on the ground, 21 degrees, F, 63 % relative humidity. Started at 9 a.m., finished at 10:30 a.m., still snowy and cold.

2012-05-16 Harvest Raked single alfalfa windrows into double windrows. Raking single windrows into double windrow makes harvest (chopping) the alfalfa more time efficient and the double windrows feed into the chopper better than the single windrows. We only raked T6 reps: 3, 4, 2, and 1. The dairy already started harvesting in reps 6 so we decided to start raking in rep 3 so that we could stay ahead of the chopper.

2008-07-29 Observation Rolled all the oats in the alleyway area of field 98. Leveling tines were not in the soil we only used the packers to roll the oats flat.

2008-06-19 Soil Preparation Soil finished all alleyway areas in the GLBRC intensive site on June 19, 2008. On June 20, 2008 Mark Klok planted oats in all the GLBRC intensive alleyway areas.

2008-07-11 Soil Preparation Jim Stoneburner used the JD 5425 and JD 970 cultimulcher to pack the soil in the switchgrass fertility/harvest timing study. The area was uneven after Jim went over the area so I went over the area three times with the JD 6420 tractor and JD 960 field cultivator. I went over the area in different directions, I went deep with the field cultivator to move the soil around to make sure to level the soil in the study area. After the field cultivation Jim when over the area again with the JD 5425 tractor and JD 970 cultimulcher.

2013-08-21 Harvest Because the lack of sunshine yesterday afternoon and heavy dew in the morning we needed to rake alfalfa in LTER Main Site T6 plots again. Justin Mezo raked replications 1, 2, and 4. Terry Tilley raked replications 6, 3, and 5.

Drill setting was set at 44. There was 500 lbs loaded into the drill at the beginning of planting and after planting 2 acres there was 167 lbs left in the drill. This works out to a seeding rate of 166.5 lbs/A or 1,831,500 seeds/A.

2014-08-08 Harvest Tedded the alfalfa in T6 plots, all reps, reps: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. Hay tedding in when you spread the alfalfa out so that it will try faster. Time was between 2:20 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Used the JD 5425 tractor and Sitrex 2-rotor, Rotary Tedder.

Clover seed had a coating that was 34% of the seed weight. A pure live seed calculation was done to calculate amount of seed per acre needed to achieve the 12 lbs/A of pure live seed. The calculation equaled 20 lbs/A seeding rate to achieve the 12 lbs/A of pure seed. Clover was seeded with John Deere 5425 tractor traveling at 5.0 mph, and Gandy Air Seeder (15 ft boom length) equipped with 8 deflectors spaced 22.5 inches. Gandy motor setting was 1.78 with the red metering wheels in and the gates on the Gandy were in the first position.

2018-10-18 Harvest Harvested soybeans in LTER Main Site, treatments T4 all replications, reps: 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1. Entire plot weight was determined by unloading soybeans from the combine to a Brent Weigh Wagon, by Unverferth Co. A 15' 'headland' pass from the north and south ends were harvested before the plots. The 'headland pass' was not included in the plot weight. Number of soybean rows harvested from each plot were counted and recorded to determine total area harvested. Moisture and test weights were determined using a portable Dicky-john GAC500 XT grain analysis moisture tester. Viking Organic Soybean Seed Variety ? , certified organic soybean seed is what was being harvested.

2018-10-30 Herbicide Application Sprayed LTER 15ft prairie strips in T3 plots all replications and borders of LTER N-Rate Study with Roundup Powermax. Roundup Powermax applied at 3 qts/A. Roundup was applied to control grass that has started to grow before wheat comes up. Weather conditions at start 3:15 p.m. cloudy, 56.5 degrees F, humidity 56.2%, with 10-12 mph south winds. Weather conditions at the end 5:30 p.m. cloudy 56.8 degrees F, humidity 61.9% wind 8-9 mph south.

2019-07-24 Planting Seeded Medium Red Clover into corn plots in LTER Biodiversity Study treatments B5: (114, 217, 312, 405), B8: (118, 214, 310, 408), B15: (112, 213, 301, 415). Seeded red Clover at 12 lbs/A pure live seed. Clover seed had a coating that was 34.29% of the seed weight. A pure live seed calculation was done to calculate amount of seed per acre needed to achieve the 12 lbs/A of pure live seed. The calculation equaled 31 lbs/A seeding rate to achieve the 12 lbs/A of pure seed. Clover was seeded with John Deere 5425 tractor traveling at 5.0 mph, gear C1 at 1250 rpm’s, and Gandy Air Seeder (15 ft boom length) equipped with 8 deflectors spaced 22.5 inches. Gandy motor setting was 1.8 with the red metering wheels in and the gates on the Gandy were in the first position. Clover was applied directly over standing corn.
