2010-04-26 Planting Replanted poplar trees in the GLBRC Main Site Treatment G8, all replications. Criteria for replanting: 1. original cutting from 2008 or replanted cutting(s) from 2009 did not grow; 2. replanted cutting(s) from 2009 grew but total visible growth was less than 6”; 3. cutting grew well but deer damaged the tree to below ground level and nothing was visible above ground. Transplanting material were 1 year old bare root whips measuring between 3 feet and 6 feet in height. Roots were pruned as necessary to reduce the risk of J-hook. Roots were also soaked for approximately 1-2 hours prior to planting. A hole was dug approximately 8-12 inches deep and 8-15 inches in diameter, the root ball placed in it, and the hole was filled in. The following number of trees was planted: Replicate 1 - 3; Replicate 2 - 2; Replicate 3 - 16; Replicate 4 - 15; Replicate 5 - 11.

2010-04-19 Planting Replanted poplar trees in the LTER Main Site Treatment T5s, all replications (Date planting was completed: reps R4 (4/15), R3 (4/15-16), R2 (4/16), R1 (4/16), R5 (4/16), and R6(4/19)). Trees were replanted over a 3-day span from 04/15-04/19/2010. Criteria for replanting: 1. original cutting from 2009 did not grow; 2. original cutting from 2009 grew but total visible growth was less than 6”; 3. original cutting grew well but deer damaged the tree to below ground level and nothing was visible above ground. 2011-05-27 Planting Transplanted Miscanthus root/shoot stock in the GLBRC Main Site Treatment G6 replication 4. Transplanting occurred over three days: May 20th (100 plants), May 23rd (393 plants), and May 27th (268 plants). The goal of transplanting was to remove root balls of the same age from an ancillary plot (both were established within 5 days in 2008) and move intact root balls to areas in the replicate 4 plot where there were no plants. Transplants were placed and aligned according to the original 2008 planting design (30” x 30”). Ideal root balls were composed of 3-6 actively growing shoots with their intact root system and an intact soil ball around the roots. Transplanted shoots were approximately 15” to 24” high. The goal was to plant the root balls into a hole large enough to allow approximately 2” on all sides of the ball, and deep enough so that the principal root system would be 5-6” deep, even if this were to be deeper than the roots were prior to being dug. Usually, the holes were about 8” deep, and 8-10” across. The leaves on the shoots were then held up so they would not be buried underground when the hole was filled in. The original soil from the hole was used to fill in; it was crumbled and then packed in to ensure good contact between the transplanted root ball and the sides of the hole. Between May 24th and May 27th, approximately 4 inches of rainfall was received.
