Comment:
End Harvest on GLBRC Main Site G8 poplar trees. Poplar plots were separated into three categories unfertilized, fertilized and remaining plot with the first row on both the north and south side being removed first to eliminate edge effect. First row of trees on both north and south sides were harvested on January 10&13, 2014. Trees were either cut with chainsaw or sheared with Bobcat and then laid in bundles where they were lifted up and weighed by the Bobcat. Unfertilized micro-plots were the second and third rows of trees on the north side of each plot (5'-15' from edge of plot). Reps 2,4,5 were harvested on 1/17/2014, rep 3 harvested on 1/20/2014, and rep 1 was harvested on 2/13/2014 (north side of rep 1 harvested last due to gas chambers). Fertilized micro-plots were the second and third rows of trees on the south side of each plot (5'-15' from edge of plot). Reps 1,2,4,5 were harvested on 1/17/2014, rep 3 was harvested on 1/20/2014. Trees in both unfertilized and fertilized micro-plots were hand cut with a chainsaw then chipped into a 1-ton pickup with a box and then weighed on axle scales. Remaining plot (also unfertilized) were the trees after the outside first rows, and the micro-plots were taken off of each north and south ends. Trees were sheared close to the ground with a Bobcat machine and then taken over to a chipper where they were fed through and chipped into an enclosed dump trailer pulled by a pickup and weighed across the scales at the dairy. Order of harvest for remaining plot is as follows rep 3 harvested between (1/22/2014 - 1/31/2014), rep 5 (2/3/2014 - 2/7/2014), rep 2 (2/7/2014 - 2/10/2014), rep 4 (2/11/2014 - 2/12/2014), rep 1 (2/12/2014 - 2/13/2014). Cody Johnson and Mickey Trimmer from the Michigan State University Kellogg Forest assisted with the G8 poplar tree harvest.
