Planting |
Planted red clover at 15 lbs/A on September 20, 2005 into treatments 3, 6, and 17 in the biodiversity study. We replanted the clover because the clover that we frost seeded on March 16, 2005 did not grow much over the spring and summer. If we want to have a clover crop to plow under next spring I decided that replanting was necessary. The plots that red clover were planted in were treatment 3, plots 111, 203, 306, 403, treatment 6, plots 107, 207, 317, 406, and treatment 17, plots 116, 211, 302, 417. Clover was planted with the JD 7400 tractor and JD 750 no-till drill. Clover was planted 0.5 inch deep. To plant 15 lbs/A of clover the front seeder box on the JD 750 drill was set on 5.5. |

Planting |
No-till seeded red clover at 10.5 lbs/A in the LTER Main Site T3 plots all replications (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6). Due to heavy weed pressure in the spring T3 plots had to be sprayed which also killed most of the red clover. Clover was replanted after wheat was harvested and the plots were sprayed with a pre-plant burn down to control the post harvest weed flush. Clover planted 1/4 inch into the ground.

Over-seeded the Biodiversity Study treatments B4 and B15, all replications, with red clover into field corn. The treatments which were seeded were corn plots which were suppose to have leguminous cover crops as part of their rotation: B4 (plots 104, 220, 307, and 404) and B15 (plots 112, 213, 301 and 415). Clover was seeded using an EarthWay Ev-N-Spred bag seeder (model 2700A) at setting 2.5-3.0. At this setting, the seeder is designed to spread the seed over 18 feet; however, due to the tall corn, passes were made to cover only 10' (three passes in each 30' wide plot); medium red clover seed was broadcast at approximately 30 lbs/A into standing corn: this was 2 1/2 times the recommended amount however the height of the corn limited the effective spread of the seeds--at seeding time, the corn was approximately 6 feet tall (from 4 to 7 depending on the plot establishment). Additionally, mechanical difficulties with the seeder contributed to the high seeding rate. |

Frost seeded clover into 2012 Biodiversity wheat plots with cover crop. Organic medium red clover seed was frost seeded into Biodiversity treatments B5 (114, 217, 312, 405), B8 (118, 214, 310, 408), and B17 (116, 211, 302, 417), all of which had winter wheat planted in November 2011. Clover was seeded at 12 lbs/A in two passes of a Gandy air seeder with a 15' boom length. Weather conditions at time of seeding: Sunny, wind 0-3 mph from NW, 1/2” light fluffy snow on the ground, 21 degrees, F, 63 % relative humidity. Started at 9 a.m., finished at 10:30 a.m., still snowy and cold. |

No-till seeded red clover at 13.3 lbs/A (14.9 kg/ha) in the LTER Biodiversity study, treatments B3 (111, 203, 306, 403), B6 (107, 207, 317, 406), B15 (112, 213, 301,415). Clover was seeded slightly heavy due to late planting and soil conditions. Variety of clover was a certified organic medium red clover obtained from DKB Farms & Services LLC located out of Columbiaville MI. Product ID: 11449 stated it had 98.4% pure seed, .59% inert matter and a germination rate of 91%.
Planting depth was 1/4 inch deep and seeding population on seeding box was set at 5. Planted with the JD7420a tractor and JD1590 15ft no-till drill. We did not have a count of the number of seed that each pound of the red clover contained, therefore we can not say how many seeds were planted per acre.

Frost seeded LTER Main Site Treatment T4 all replications, and the Biodiversity study treatments b4 (104, 220, 307, 404), b7 (105, 219, 305, 407), b17 (116, 211, 302, 417), with Medium Red Clover at 12 lbs/A. Clover seed had a coating that was 34% of the seed weight. A pure live seed calculation was done to calculate amount of seed per acre needed to achieve the 12 lbs/A of pure live seed. The calculation equaled 20 lbs/A seeding rate to achieve the 12 lbs/A of pure seed (see papers attached).
Clover was seeded with John Deere 5220 tractor traveling at 5.0 mph, gear C1 at 1600 rpm’s, and Gandy Air Seeder (15 ft boom length) equipped with 8 deflectors spaced 22.5 inches. Gandy motor setting was 1.78 with the red metering wheels in and the gates on the Gandy were in the first position. Boom height was 23 inches from the ground, bottom of the defectors were 20 inches from the ground.
Start of application was 8:15 a.m. weather was cloudy 41 degrees F 3-7 mph east north east wind, 81% humidity. End of application 1:20 p.m. cloudy 46 degrees F 6-10 mph east north east wind, 63% humidity.
Total amount of seed added was 359 pounds with 33 pounds remaining at the end. so 326 pounds of seed applied over 16 acres equals 20.4 lbs/A seeding rate. This should give close to a 12 lbs/A pure live seeding rate. |
