2010-04-23 Fertilizer Application Fertilized LTER N-rate study (Irrigated and Non-irrigated fertility gradient study). Fertilizer applications were with 28-0-0 which supplied 28% nitrogen in the form of Urea-Ammonium Nitrate (UAN). A single pass of a boom type sprayer was used broadcast spray and apply the correct amount of fertilizer. The amounts of nitrogen applied were as follows: F1 (101, 203, 209, 404, 501, 603, 709, 804) 0 lbs/A; F2 (102, 202, 304, 406, 502, 602, 704, 806) 20 lbs N/A (7 gal/A); F3 (103, 205, 302, 407, 503, 605, 702, 807) 40 lbs N/A (13.5 gal/A); F4 (104, 208, 305, 403, 504, 608, 705, 803) 60 lbs N/A (20 gal/A); F5 (105, 204, 306, 401, 505, 604, 706, 801) 80 lbs N/A (27 gal/A); F6 (106, 209, 308, 402, 506, 609, 708, 802) 100 lbs N/A (33.5 gal/A); F7 (107, 201, 307, 408, 507, 601, 707, 808) 120 lbs N/A (40 gal/A); F8 (108, 207, 303, 405, 508, 607, 703, 805) 140 lbs N/A (47 gal/A); F9 (109, 206, 301, 409, 509, 606, 701, 809) 160 lbs N/A (53.5 gal/A). Guard plots were sprayed at rates comparable to adjacent treatment plots; i.e. west of 101, unsprayed; west of 301 sprayed at F9 rate; east of 690 sprayed at F6 rate; east of 809 sprayed at F9 rate; middle buffer plots between replications 2 & 5 and between 4 & 7 were sprayed at 80 lbs N/A except for the single plot west of 501 which was unsprayed because it was adjacent to an F1 level. Time of application was between 1:30 and 4:30 p.m. Temperature at start was 61F, 37% relative humidity, skies were cloudy. Wind was between 8-10 mph at start with 10 minute average of 8 mph from ESE. Equipment used: John Deere 5220 tractor pulling a Top-Air pull type sprayer equipped with a hydraulic centrifugal sprayer pump. The sprayer was controlled by a Raven 440 automatic carrier control unit. Nozzles were spaced 15 inches apart along the 15 foot boom length extending from the center of the drive-line off to the right side of the sprayer. Different pressures, rpm, and speeds were used for the application so that the pressure range at the sprayer varied between 20-35 psi. TeeJet 8001 nozzles were used for the F2 level. TurboTeeJet 11002 nozzles were used for the F3 and F4 levels. TurboTeeJet 11005 nozzles were used for the F5, F6, F7, F8 and F9 levels.
